Why We Built Unshift

The Problem We Saw Everywhere

We kept watching the same frustration play out with friends, family, and colleagues. Someone would say "I need a website for my business" or "I want to launch this idea quickly." And then we'd hear one of two stories:

1. "I spent three months and $5,000 hiring a web developer." The website looks great, but they're locked into updates and changes that require paying someone else.
2. "I used Wix and Squarespace." It was quick and cheap, but the final result felt generic. And now I'm stuck paying monthly forever even though my site barely changes.

There had to be a better way. Something that was fast, affordable, and produced something you could actually be proud of.

What We Wanted to Build

We weren't trying to build a tool for developers. We were trying to solve this: how do you let anyone create a professional, modern website in a matter of hours instead of weeks or months?

Our vision:

• A useful starting point: describe what you want or pick a template. Review the first draft, replace sample content and test the site before publishing.
• Actually beautiful: not generic template vibes. Modern design that looks like you hired a real designer.
• Your site is yours: Pro includes React + Vite code export. Choose compatible hosting and modify the project while maintaining its dependencies and connected services.
• Ridiculously easy to update: drag sections around. Swap layouts. Edit text and images. No coding skills needed.

The tools we looked at were either magical (but locked you in) or open (but required you to code). We wanted both.

Here's What We Built

Unshift is three things working together:

1. A Massive Block Library

650+ pre-built website sections. Hero sections. Pricing tables. Feature grids. Testimonials. CTAs. Footers. Every building block a professional website needs, designed to work together. Mix and match them like Lego.

2. A Visual Editor That Actually Works

Drag blocks onto your page. Swap their order with one click. Change colors. Edit text. Upload your own images. See every change happen instantly. No "save and refresh" delays. No hidden code hiding behind the UI.

3. AI That Generates Real Pages

Connect your own AI assistant (Claude or ChatGPT) to Unshift, then tell it what you want in plain English (no prompting tricks needed). It builds actual, working pages in your account using your blocks and design system. Not some janky placeholder. Real, polished sites you can launch today. Because inference runs on your provider account, Unshift does not sell per-build generation credits. Provider charges and limits still apply; the assistant sends Unshift tool requests and the content needed to create or edit your site.

The Magic: Switch Mode

One of our favorite features is something we call Switch Mode. You're building your site, and you realize one section would look better with a different layout. In most builders, you'd have to delete the section and start over.

With Unshift, you click "switch." Your content stays, but the section rearranges instantly. You see three different layout options for the same content. Pick the one that feels right.

It's a small thing, but it's the difference between building fast and building with confidence.

Pricing That Doesn't Trap You

We didn't build Unshift to charge you for sites you are not even using yet. Our pricing philosophy:

• You can start completely free. Build and publish up to three sites at no cost on free *.unshift.dev addresses without paying a thing.
• Choose the Pro capacity you need. Pro starts at $12/month on monthly billing for one site with Pro features, adding a custom domain with managed SSL, traffic analytics, collaborators, code export and removal of Unshift branding. Free allows three created and three published sites; Pro allows unlimited created sites.
• No Unshift generation-credit allowance. You connect your own AI assistant once, and inference runs on your provider account. There is no metered AI usage on your Unshift bill.

Free gives you room to try the editor within its three-site creation and publishing limits. Pro is a recurring subscription for selected site capacity, including its paid features, whether or not every selected slot currently has a published site.

What Makes This Different

Different builders offer different export options. With Unshift Pro, you can export a React + Vite project and move it into a GitHub repository, Vercel, your own compatible server or Netlify. Check the hosting configuration and any connected services when moving it.

We also included three.js 3D support, compatible API data connectors, and managed publishing if you want it. But the core workflow is simple: start with a design, edit the site and publish after review. Pro code export gives you another way to maintain it.
