Build a freelancer portfolio that explains your work
Choose a portfolio template, write useful project stories, replace demonstration content, and publish a site prospective clients can understand.
A portfolio needs more than a grid of attractive pictures. Someone considering hiring you needs to understand the problem, what you contributed and how to start a conversation.
Kestrel is an Unshift portfolio template for work-led presentations. Start by previewing its demonstration site, then open the Editor catalogue, find Kestrel and choose Use template. The catalogue link requires you to select the template; it does not create a site by itself.
Choose three projects you can explain
Select a few projects that fit the work you want next. For each, collect a picture you have permission to publish and write four short notes:
- The brief: what needed to change?
- Your role: what did you personally contribute?
- The work: which choices or deliverables matter?
- The outcome: what can you honestly demonstrate?
If a result was not measured, describe the deliverable instead of inventing a commercial outcome. A personal project is useful when it is labelled as personal work. Do not present template work or fictional clients as your own.
Here is an example structure for an illustrative project:
Project: a personal study for an independent bookshop.
Brief: make events and opening hours easy to find.
Role: visual direction and a responsive website concept.
Work: a clear event listing, readable book details and a simple visit page.
Outcome: an interactive concept. It was not commissioned by a client.
This gives a prospective client more information than a screenshot with an unexplained title.
Replace the demonstration content throughout the site
Unshift copies the chosen template into your account and opens it in the visual editor. The normal template flow also starts the initial publication, so review what is visible at the free address while making it yours.
Replace the introduction with who you help and the work you do. Use a direct sentence, such as “I design identities and websites for independent cultural businesses,” only if it accurately describes your practice.
Replace project pictures, titles and descriptions. Review every project page as well as the homepage. Check the about page, contact information, footer and navigation for sample names, social links or claims that do not belong to you. If the template presents projects as a collection, edit the project records as well as the page layout. Select text and images on the canvas to replace page content.
You can reduce the number of projects. Three explained projects are more useful than twelve sample projects you have not replaced.
Make contacting you straightforward
State the kinds of projects you accept and give visitors a clear next action. Test your email link or enquiry form on a phone as well as a desktop. If you use a form, verify that its recipient is correct and that your own test message arrives.
Only publish client materials you have permission to show. If an engagement is confidential, describe your skills through a separate personal example instead of publishing private work.
Preview, publish and share the right address
Read the portfolio at a phone width. Check image crops, project navigation, heading lengths and the contact action. Publish your changes, then open the public address separately and follow the same path a client would take: introduction, project, contact.
